Discover How Chem-Dry Can Eliminate Pet Urine Odours Forever

Why Choose Chem-Dry Action for Pet Odour Removal?

Our P.U.R.T.® (Pet Urine Removal Treatment) system is scientifically proven to permanently eliminate pet urine odours — not just mask them.

Permanently Eliminates Odours at the Source

Unlike sprays and deodorisers that simply mask the smell, P.U.R.T.® triggers a chemical reaction that destroys urine odour crystals at the molecular level — permanently and completely.

Scientifically Proven — 99.9% Odour Removal

Independent laboratory testing has shown that Chem-Dry's P.U.R.T.® process removes 99.9% of pet urine odours from carpets and upholstery — the most effective treatment available.

Dedicated Local Owner Operator

Chem-Dry Action is locally owned and operated on Sydney's Northern Beaches. We treat every home with care and respect — and we genuinely love pets too.

Treats Carpet, Underlay and Subfloor

Pet urine doesn't just stay in the carpet — it soaks through to the underlay and the floor beneath. Our treatment penetrates all layers to ensure complete odour elimination.

Safe for Pets, Children and the Environment

P.U.R.T.® is non-toxic, pH neutral and completely safe for your family and your pets. There are no harsh chemicals — just a powerful, natural enzyme-based treatment.

Stops Repeat Accidents in the Same Spot

Pets are attracted back to the same spot by the residual scent of urine. By completely eliminating the odour at the source, P.U.R.T.® breaks the cycle and discourages re-marking.

How P.U.R.T.® Permanently Destroys Pet Urine Odour

When your pet has an accident on the carpet, the urine immediately begins to penetrate deep into the carpet fibres, through the backing, into the underlay and even into the subfloor beneath. As the urine dries, the liquid evaporates — but the urine crystals remain, becoming more concentrated and more pungent over time.

Regular carpet cleaning — including steam cleaning — cannot remove these crystals. In fact, adding moisture can temporarily increase the odour as the crystals are reactivated. P.U.R.T.® works differently: our technician applies the treatment directly to the affected area, where it immediately begins a powerful chemical reaction that breaks down and destroys the urine crystals at the molecular level.

The result? A permanently fresh, odour-free carpet — not just a temporarily masked smell.

The Hidden Health Risks of Untreated Pet Urine

Pet urine in your carpet is more than just an unpleasant smell — it is a genuine health concern for your family. When urine is first deposited, it has a low pH and is relatively easy to treat. However, as it dries, it becomes highly alkaline (pH 10–12), creating the ideal environment for bacteria to multiply rapidly.

Untreated pet urine in carpets has been linked to:

  • Increased indoor allergens — particularly harmful for asthma sufferers
  • Respiratory irritation and breathing difficulties
  • Headaches, nausea and general discomfort
  • A persistent, pervasive odour that spreads through the entire home

Chem-Dry Action's P.U.R.T.® treatment eliminates these harmful bacteria along with the odour, restoring a truly healthy indoor environment for your family and your pets.

Why Store-Bought Products and Steam Cleaning Don't Work

Many pet owners try to tackle urine odours with supermarket sprays, baking soda, or steam cleaning — and are frustrated when the smell returns within days. Here's why those methods fail:

Store-bought odour sprays contain perfumes and masking agents that temporarily cover the smell. They do not break down the urine crystals, so the odour returns — often stronger — as the perfume fades.

Steam cleaning introduces heat and moisture, which can actually reactivate urine crystals and temporarily intensify the odour. Steam cleaning also cannot penetrate the underlay and subfloor where the majority of urine contamination resides.

P.U.R.T.® is the only treatment that works at the molecular level to permanently destroy the source of the odour — not just the surface symptoms. It is the same reason that Chem-Dry is trusted by property managers, real estate agents, and landlords across Sydney for end-of-lease pet odour remediation.

Everything You Need to Know About Pet Urine Odour Removal

At Chem-Dry Action, we understand that your pets are part of the family. Accidents happen — and when they do, it's important to act quickly and use the right treatment to prevent permanent damage to your carpets and a lasting odour in your home.

Why Does Pet Urine Smell So Bad?

Fresh pet urine has a relatively mild odour. The problem begins as the urine dries. The liquid evaporates, but the urine salts and crystals remain in the carpet fibres, backing, underlay and subfloor. As these crystals become more concentrated, they produce an increasingly pungent ammonia-like smell.

The odour is further intensified by bacteria that thrive in the warm, moist, alkaline environment created by dried urine. These bacteria break down the urine further, producing additional odour compounds — including mercaptans, the same compounds found in skunk spray.

Humidity makes the problem worse. On humid days, the urine crystals absorb moisture from the air and temporarily release their odour more strongly — which is why pet odour in carpets often seems worse in summer or after rain.

Why Does My Pet Keep Going Back to the Same Spot?

Pets have a sense of smell that is many times more powerful than ours. Even after you have cleaned a urine spot and can no longer smell it yourself, your pet can still detect the residual scent — and this signals to them that this is an acceptable toilet area. This is why repeat accidents in the same location are so common.

By completely eliminating the odour at the molecular level, P.U.R.T.® removes the scent marker that draws your pet back to the same spot. This is one of the most important — and often overlooked — benefits of professional pet urine treatment.

What Areas Can Chem-Dry Action Treat?

Our P.U.R.T.® treatment is effective on a wide range of surfaces and materials, including:

  • All types of carpet — wool, synthetic, loop pile, cut pile, berber
  • Upholstery — sofas, armchairs, ottomans, dining chairs
  • Area rugs and oriental rugs
  • Mattresses
  • Hardwood floors and subfloor (in conjunction with carpet treatment)

How Soon Should I Act After a Pet Accident?

The sooner you act, the better the outcome. Fresh urine is far easier to treat than old, dried urine that has had time to penetrate deeply and crystallise. If your pet has an accident:

  1. Blot up as much of the urine as possible with clean white cloths or paper towels — do not rub, as this pushes the urine deeper into the fibres
  2. Apply cold water to dilute the urine and blot again
  3. Avoid using steam cleaners or hot water, as heat can set the stain and intensify the odour
  4. Call Chem-Dry Action as soon as possible for a professional P.U.R.T.® treatment

Is P.U.R.T.® Safe for My Pets and Children?

Absolutely. P.U.R.T.® is a non-toxic, enzyme-based treatment that is completely safe for children, pets and people with chemical sensitivities. There are no harsh solvents or synthetic perfumes. The treatment is pH neutral and leaves no sticky residue behind.

We recommend keeping pets and children off the treated area while it is drying — typically 2–4 hours — and then the area is completely safe for normal use.

Can Old or Set-In Pet Urine Stains Be Removed?

In many cases, yes. P.U.R.T.® has shown excellent results on even severe, long-standing urine contamination. However, the outcome depends on the extent of the damage, the type of carpet, and whether the urine has penetrated through to the subfloor. In cases of extreme contamination, underlay replacement may also be recommended.

Our technician will assess the affected areas using a UV black light to identify all urine deposits — including those invisible to the naked eye — before recommending the most appropriate treatment plan.

FACT: Independent laboratory testing shows Chem-Dry's P.U.R.T.® process removes an average of 99.9% of pet urine odours from carpets — the most effective pet odour treatment available.
